Focused Mobile Solutions
As smartphones become more common, businesses need to consider how m-commerce will be incorporated into the overall e-commerce, ICT and marketing communications strategies.
Should I bother with mobile commerce?
Whether or not m-commerce is relevant to your business at this stage will depend on the type of business you are in and the profile of your main target audiences.
Initially, we would recommend an analysis of your main market segments to see whether developing m-commerce facilities (eg a mobile app) makes good business sense - it could deliver lower costs or improve sales and give you a competitive advantage. However, when looking at your return on investment, you have to remember - adding value is the key to success.
Smartphone Market Shares
As they become cheaper, smartphone penetration is increasing every month. Over the next few years, all new phones will be smartphones of some description. In 2010 (Q4), the smartphone sales (according to Gartner) were as follows :
- Apple - 16%
- Android - 33%
- Symbian - 31%
- RIM - 14%
Windows Mobile sales have been very low but are likely to increase significantly through their strategic alliance with Nokia. The overall market share of each mobile phone OS will affect your (mobile app) software development strategy although new standards and development environments are beginning to emerge to make this process easier.
